Regular Brake Service - Critical to your safety
Good brakes are critical to your safety. That's why it's so important to know when your brakes need maintenance. Here’s how braking systems work:
When you push down on the brake pedal, the master brake cylinder compresses brake fluid, activating your vehicle's brake pads (or brake shoes) through hydraulic pressure. The brake pads make contact with the rotors (or drums) on your wheels, stopping your vehicle. More complex braking systems use electronic sensors, but the end result is the same.
Every time you brake, you wear down your brake pads. You will stop thousands of times before the pads need replacing, but eventually they wear out. If you don’t replace them soon enough, the metal that houses the pads will make contact with the brake rotors on your wheels, producing both a safety issue and a situation where the rotors need to be replaced as a result of prolonged contact of metal on metal.
Knowing when you need new brakes
Heed these warning signs and you will stay safe and save money:
- Do you feel a pulsing or softness when you press the brake pedal?
- Do you hear a squealing or grinding sound when you brake?
- Does the brake warning light come on when you are driving?
- Does your vehicle pull to one side when you brake?
If you notice any of the above, your brakes are in need of immediate attention. The problem won’t go away – it will only get worse, and can put you in danger. The best plan is to have your brakes inspected regularly and to have the pads replaced before they wear down to the rotors.
